Phase 3

About Phase 3 Books

All reading bands consolidate learning from previous levels. Phase 3 books have a slightly increased number of words, an increase of pages and slightly more complex story lines. They also include Phase 3 phonemes and tricky words and these build as children are taught these in their daily phonics sessions.

How to support your child

Your child is beginning to learn how to read. As they read, please help them to:

  • Read the words carefully. Most of the words can be recognised or sounded out. Ask your child to segment and blend only the words they cannot read yet, not every word.
  • Ask them to identify diagraphs and trigraphs when segmenting and blending words.
  • Encourage them to think about the punctuation in the book and what to do when they come across this.
  • Giving them time to recognise and correct their own mistakes.
  • Asking them to talk about what’s happening in the book, encouraging them to make links to events on previous pages.
