NSPCC assembly - Speak out, stay safe
Mon 20 May 2019Dear Parent/Carer,
NSPCC visited our school today and delivered their Speak out. Stay safe. assembly to share information with your child about how they can keep themselves safe from harm and get help if they have any worries.
It was a very worthwhile and empowering session for both pupils and teachers. They spoke to the children and staff about the valuable work they do across the country, and talked about how important it is for everyone in our school community to join them in their ‘fight for every childhood’.
As a charity, they can only provide these vital resources thanks to the financial support and generosity of their supporters.
That’s why we’re raising money to help the NSPCC’s work in schools
I am delighted to say that our school has chosen to support the valuable work of the NSPCC
this term by taking part in a fundraising event, and I would really value your support and encouragement.
How your children can have fun – and make a massive difference
Children will be doing a 'Sponsored Big Buddy skills' event in the next few weeks which will not only be exciting for our pupils but will also mean they’re raising money for the NSPCC’s vital work and helping keep even more children safe.
Participation is purely voluntary but if you would like to support the NSPCC’s work, it would be fantastic if you could give your child permission to take part by signing the sponsor form and return the sponsored event form and money raised to school by 20th June 2019 . If you have more than one child in school simply put all your children’s names at the top of one form.
To say thank you, every child that attended the assembly today will receive a Speak out. Stay safe. Buddy sticker. And every child who takes part in the activity later will receive a special Buddy badge.
But more than that, they can also be proud that every penny raised will make a significant difference for children. By supporting the NSPCC we can work together to end child abuse.
Talking PANTS with your children
The NSPCC’s work in schools will help encourage conversations about staying safe – and they have a number of child-friendly materials to help you carry on the conversation afterwards. That includes ‘Talk PANTS’, a simple way for parents to help keep children safe from sexual abuse – without using scary words or even mentioning sex.
The guide uses the rules of PANTS to teach children that their body belongs to them and them alone.
You can find out more and download the free resources at nspcc.org.uk/pants
If you’d like to know more about the NSPCC’s work, or take a look at the wide range of information and advice which is available for parents and carers, please visit their website nspcc.org.uk/parents
Many thanks, Mrs Stephanie Astle

Year 6 SATs
Fri 17 May 2019SATs tests - Well done Y6
We would like to congratulate all of our Year 6 pupils on all their hard work during this week’s assessments. We are really proud in the manner with which they have approached this week, in spite of the media attention and concerns in relation to the pressure that they could possibly be put under. Our Governors who came to oversee the process commented on how relaxed and positive our children were are they came into our breakfast club each morning and throughout the week. This was a resounding success and one which will be repeated next year.
Thank you to all the parents who have given such positive support to the children, school and staff for the SATs tests. I am sure that you will appreciate how hard everyone has worked, not only to prepare children for the tests but to ensure that a balance has been maintained with the other subjects in the curriculum.
Thank you to all the adults who have been involved in supporting and preparing the children for this week. I am sure you will agree with me when I say that Mr Leonard and Miss Watt are great assets to our school as reflected in their hard work and support leading up to and during this week.
Whilst important, the tests can only be a measure of your children’s attainment on the day, in only reading, maths and spelling, grammar and punctuation. Your end of year report will give a wider overview of your child’s achievements and successes across the year.
Year 6, we are super proud of you! Well done! Enjoy your dress down day of fun activities!

Update from Conkers - the best time ever!!!!
Fri 03 May 2019Everyone has had the most amazing time at Conkers over the last few days - bravery, resilience, positivity and enjoyment have been the highlights - we have been noted publicly as being the most well behaved and engaged group that the rangers and staff have met.
Evenings were filled with laughing and fun and despite one or two wobbles, children were tucked up and settled ready for the next day! To say they have done us proud, is an understatement!
We will share more photos and news later when we return. Keep an eye on parentmail for more news of our arrival back at school.

Nursery Consultation - April 2019
Tue 23 Apr 2019Nursery Consultation
The Governing Body of High Oakham Primary School are wishing to consider the following proposal:
From September 2019, High Oakham Primary School are considering changing the times of the Nursery sessions to allow for greater flexibility and clarity around the provision of universal and extended entitlement childcare.
The current times are: 8.45-11.45 am session
11.45-12.30 lunchtime
12.30-3.30 pm session
We are proposing the following times: 8.30-11.30 am session,
11.30-12.30 lunchtime
12.30-3.30 pm session
This proposal is made with the full support of the staff in the Nursery and the Governing Body. The Nursery has been operating under the school for nearly 2 years and have evaluated the provision and procedures closely. In order to access the ‘free’ childcare as parents are entitled to – eliminating the ’45 minutes’ is needed. The full day will then become a 7 hour day as opposed to a 6 hour 45 min day.
A set hourly rate will be introduced - £4 an hour in line with government funding for universal and extended entitlement. We will then be able to meet the needs of families in a more flexible way.
A full time place will be 35 hours a week – 30 hours extended entitlement can be used with 5 hours additional top up meaning a total cost of £20 per week to be paid or 15 hours universal entitlement can be used and topped us as needed and/or available using the £4 an hour rate. Before Nursery and after Nursery sessions can be accessed at Tree House out of school care on the same school site.
(Please note: the whole process of accessing sessions at Nursery is changing and when this consultation is complete all procedures will be finalised and on High Oakham Primary School’s website - Nursery)
We would like to consider your views on the above proposal which is set out above if you have had children in our Nursery, have children here or will have children in our Nursery in the future.
Please email head@highoakham.notts.sch.uk with Nursery Consultation as the subject heading or write to:
High Oakham Primary School,
Nottingham Road,
Mansfield,
NG18 4SH
This consultation will be open for 3 weeks when the matter will then be discussed further with the governing body.
